The European Commission is the primary executive body of the European Union and one of the world's largest funders of research and innovation. Through its flagship programme, Horizon Europe, the Commission invests billions to tackle global challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and public health. Its funding instruments—ranging from the European Research Council (ERC) for frontier science to the European Innovation Council (EIC) for breakthrough technology—facilitate international collaboration and strengthen the scientific and technological bases of the European Research Area.
