University of Birmingham
At the 2026 Research & Impact Awards, the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements & Critical Materials picked up the award for "Outstanding Research Impact", for research that has delivered a wide-reaching and significant benefit to society, culture, policy, health, the environment, or the economy.

The Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials (BCSECM) is leading the UK’s advances in recycling critical materials, shaping national and international policy through the Critical Elements and Materials (CrEAM) Network and UN partnerships.

BCSECM is informing the UK Critical Minerals Strategy, influencing major industry standards, and delivering innovations that have secured significant commercial investment, such as the HyProMag rare earth recovery process. The centre has contributed to closing post-Brexit policy gaps through the 2021 Securing Technology Critical Materials for Britain report, and the UK’s 2022 Critical Minerals Strategy.
