Research:
Policy Impact

My research portfolio's policy footprint demonstrates how scientific and engineering research can be successfully translated into tangible public policy impact. In identifying emerging problems to architecting multi-faceted solutions, the research teams that I am part of produce science with tangible outcomes for policy makers. The research papers I have contributed to act in a dual role of "problem identifiers" as well as "solution providers", and the work I have been engaged in has captured the attention of policymakers the world over. By providing detailed actionable solutions, as well as engaging in translational activity to communicate this research to policy user groups, we aim to deliver a long-term, coherent research program focused on the central industrial and environmental challenges of our time: resource security and the transition to a sustainable, circular economy.
The various roadmaps and strategic reports do not simply describe the challenge; they outline specific technological, economic, and regulatory pathways forward. This solution-oriented approach is highly valuable to policymakers who, once convinced of a problem, require a viable and evidence-based path forward.
The reports and organisations referencing the research work I have been involved in demonstrate a clear legacy of impact, visible in the legislative briefings of regional assemblies, the policy recommendations of state environmental agencies, the strategic thinking of national governments and the foresight and planning of international organisations. The work has served as a key part of the evidence base upon which the industrial and environmental policies for a sustainable and circular economy are being built.
