REcycling CRitical Elements in Advanced Technologies for the Environment
The RECREATE project focuses on the urgent need to secure a sustainable supply of critical raw materials (CRMs) essential for the transition to a low-carbon economy. By investigating the end-of-life pathways of advanced technologies—such as wind turbines and electric vehicle components—the initiative seeks to develop innovative recycling processes that can recover high-value elements like rare earth metals. This research is vital for reducing the UK's dependence on volatile global supply chains and minimizing the environmental footprint associated with primary mining. In addition to technical recovery methods, RECREATE emphasizes the importance of a holistic circular economy approach. The project explores the economic and policy frameworks required to make recycling commercially viable and environmentally sound. By bridging the gap between laboratory-scale innovation and industrial application, RECREATE aims to establish a robust infrastructure for material reclamation that supports long-term technological resilience and environmental stewardship.
